Published Sydney guidance puts a straightforward house lockout at around A$150–A$250 during business hours and A$250–A$450 at night or on a weekend. Use these as budgeting benchmarks, then ask for the total for your door, suburb and booking time.

Faulty lock or extra work?If the hardware needs attention, ask for the additional work and cost to be assessed separately.

House lockout costs at a glance

Published Sydney lockout benchmarks — AUD
Situation Published benchmark Check before booking
Straightforward entry during business hours A$150–A$250 per job Whether the price covers travel, attendance and opening the specified door.
Night or weekend entry A$250–A$450 per job The exact booking time covered and the total including any after-hours charge.
Entry plus a faulty lock or damaged hardware Assessment and separate scope required Whether repair, replacement parts or a change of keys will be extra.

The two numeric ranges are from Keytech’s Sydney lockout guide, checked on 1 November 2026. They describe standard entry work; unusual locks, extra doors or further work need a separate estimate.

Does the price include the call-out and opening the door?

A call-out fee pays for attendance. It does not, by itself, tell you what getting inside will cost. One business may quote a complete entry price; another may list attendance and opening separately. Comparing the smaller number alone can give a misleading picture.

Ask: “What is the total to attend and open this door at this time, including GST?” If the answer is a starting price, ask what must be true for that price to apply and what could change it. Also establish what you would pay if you decide not to proceed after the locksmith arrives.

What changes the price?

Why the same door can cost more after hours

The booking time can change the price even when the lock is the same. Ask how the provider defines business hours and whether the quoted time falls into an evening, weekend or public-holiday rate. Do not assume every business uses the same timetable or surcharge.

If waiting is safe and practical, compare a later booking with immediate attendance. If someone is at risk, treat that as the priority rather than making the decision on price alone.

What can increase the cost of getting back inside?

Explain whether the door has simply shut behind you, the key is missing, the key will not turn, or part of the key is stuck in the lock. Those descriptions can point to different work. Mention every lock securing the entrance, rather than assuming one door means one lock.

A damaged mechanism may need attention after entry. Opening a door and leaving it working securely are separate tasks when the hardware has failed. Before additional work starts, ask what is changing and approve the revised scope and total.

Does a lost key mean paying for a new lock?

Getting inside does not automatically stop a lost key from working later. If that is a concern, ask about changing key access as a separate part of the job. Suitable existing hardware may be rekeyed; worn or incompatible hardware may call for a different solution.

Compare rekeying costs with lock replacement costs once the required work is clear. Neither should be assumed to be included in a door-opening quote.

House lockout cost questions

Can I get a useful estimate over the phone?

Give your suburb, the requested time, the number of locks and what happened. Photos of the visible hardware can help identify the job. Ask which assumptions the estimate relies on and what still needs checking.

Does a very quick opening mean the charge should be lower?

The time spent opening the door is only part of the visit. Attendance and any agreed minimum charge may still apply. Confirm the pricing basis before booking rather than judging the bill from the opening time alone.

Will a replacement lock be included if entry damages it?

Do not assume so. Ask how the proposed entry work affects the hardware and whether any replacement is included. If the scope changes, confirm the parts and revised total before proceeding.
