A published Sydney guide lists a lock change at around A$180–A$400 per door installed. That is a starting point for budgeting, not a universal price: changing one cylinder is a different job from replacing a complete lockset or preparing a door for a different model.

Faulty lock or extra work?If the hardware needs attention, ask for the additional work and cost to be assessed separately.

How much does a door lock cylinder replacement cost?

A cylinder is the key-operated part of many locks. Replacing it may allow other suitable hardware to stay. Replacing the whole lock can involve a different set of parts, so ask what “lock change” means in the proposal.

We have not assigned one cylinder-only price to every door. The public material reviewed often combines cylinder replacement with other work or leaves fitting and attendance unclear. A parts-only shop price is not a reliable installed-job price.

Send clear photos of the lock and door edge, if accessible, and explain whether you need a different key, replacement of a worn component or a change in how the door operates. Ask the locksmith to identify the cylinder and separate its supply-and-fit cost from any other work.

What do hardware and fitting charges cover?

A useful quote names the part being supplied rather than simply saying “new lock”. Ask for the model or specification, quantity, finish and agreed number of keys. If you are supplying hardware yourself, confirm it is suitable before treating an advertised fitting price as the full cost.

Fitting may be a direct replacement or may require changes to the door. Establish whether removal of old hardware, adjustment, operation checks and any work on the strike are included. Cosmetic repairs should also be discussed if changing the hardware exposes old holes or marks.

What changes the price?

Replacing one lock vs changing locks throughout a home

List the entrances you want assessed and the work required at each one. A front door, back door and gate may not use the same hardware. Multiplying one advertised price by the number of doors can miss differences in parts and fitting.

Request one itemised proposal for the visit. That makes it easier to see the attendance component, each replacement and the total. If you want one key for several doors, ask about compatibility before choosing the new hardware.

Could rekeying be a suitable alternative?

If the hardware works and your concern is who has a key, ask whether it can be rekeyed. Rekeying changes which key operates a compatible cylinder; it does not repair a faulty latch, loose handle or damaged door.

Use the rekey or replace guide to compare the jobs, then check how rekeying is priced. Compare quotes for the outcome you need, rather than assuming the lower-priced job solves the same problem.

Lock replacement cost questions

Can I replace only the cylinder?

Sometimes. It depends on the lock design, condition and availability of a suitable cylinder. Ask which components can stay and what the proposed change will achieve.

Does an installed price include new keys?

Ask how many keys are supplied and whether any extra cutting or keying work is charged separately. “Installed” alone does not specify every inclusion.

Is a new lock automatically more secure?

No. The hardware selected, its suitability for the door and the quality of fitting matter. Ask what improvement is being proposed rather than equating replacement with an automatic security upgrade.
